“Documentary film is about people’s lives. Getting into their mind, getting into their routine,” says Yves, a filmmaker, producer, director, and writer. Throughout his career, Yves has featured a range of individuals : monks, animal rescuers, deaf people. “I don’t think I necessarily have a style that could go like wow this is a signature.” When you do like documentary film making, different topics mean different kind of aesthetic. The story determines the style.
Capturing the story is not as easy as it sounds. “I have to empathize with the people I try to portray and to me that is very important,” says Yves. “Documentary film making is about a dialogue. It starts the moment you start talking to the person you are going to interview. You have to develop a relationship before you bring the camera in because unless you have that relationship, you are not going to capture their essence, their story.” Building intimacy and a level of comfort is key.
