According to career change statistics, the average person will change careers 5 to 7 times during their working life. Yves is currently on his 4th career change. Yves’s career started with his love of language. “My parents always thought it was very important to speak proper French and later my father encouraged me to learn English. Their efforts and their love for language transferred to me. For me it became important to do something with this.”

Yves grew up in turbulent times. The late 60s and early 70s were a time in Quebec and the rest of the world where a lot of things were happening politically. These events combined with his love of language naturally lead to a pursuit in journalism. After a few years in journalism, Yves got into hosting radio shows and it was enjoyable for him. “ People hear your voice, hear your name but they don’t necessarily recognize you on the street and I really like that aspect.”

Radio soon became a dead end and an opportunity in television presented itself. “Life takes you places, a new show was opening. I knew the people who were producing, they asked if I was interested to try television and I thought why not.” Yves revealed that one of his biggest achievements is to speak in front of the camera.  “Being born an introvert who was a shy person being able to be in front of a camera and look at the lens and talk without feeling nervous and totally natural, that’s one hell of an achievement for me.”

The love of language eventually turned into the love of image. This new found passion lead Yves to go into documentary film-making. “It was nerves wrecking. But the first 30 minute documentary film I forced myself to make, I still love everything about it. That led to other documentary series that I am happy with. Is it perfect? No, but it sort of lead me to the next step.”
